Understanding why a vehicle became a salvage listing in the first place helps explain what kind of deal you're actually looking at — and total-loss thresholds are the mechanism behind nearly every salvage title you'll encounter at auction. Once you understand how the formula actually works, damage reports start to make a lot more sense.

The Total Loss Formula

Most states use what's called a "total loss formula," comparing the estimated repair cost plus the vehicle's salvage value against its actual cash value (ACV) before the damage occurred. If that combined figure exceeds a set percentage of the ACV — commonly somewhere between 70% and 100% depending on the state — the insurer is required or incentivized to total the vehicle rather than pay for repairs, even if a full repair is technically possible.

The specific percentage threshold varies by state, and a smaller number of states use alternative approaches, like a fixed dollar threshold instead of a percentage-based formula. This state-by-state variation is exactly why identical damage on two otherwise similar vehicles can lead to very different outcomes depending on where the vehicle was insured and registered at the time of the accident.

Why the Same Damage Can Mean Different Things

This means two vehicles with genuinely similar physical damage can have very different real-world implications depending on which state they were insured in. A car totaled in a state with a lower threshold percentage might have relatively minor, very repairable damage — the insurer simply hit their required total-loss trigger sooner. A car totaled in a state with a higher threshold percentage likely needed to sustain more significant damage to reach that same total-loss decision, since a higher percentage requires the repair cost to represent a larger share of the vehicle's value before totaling becomes mandatory or economically preferable for the insurer.

This is one reason experienced auction buyers pay close attention to a listing's state of origin alongside the damage report itself. It's not a guarantee of anything specific about an individual vehicle — plenty of exceptions exist in both directions — but it adds useful context for interpreting the repair estimate you're looking at, especially when comparing similarly priced listings from different states.

Age and Value Interact With the Formula

Vehicle age and value also interact meaningfully with this formula in ways worth understanding. Older, lower-value vehicles reach total-loss status with comparatively minor damage, since even a modest repair bill can exceed a large percentage of a lower ACV. A ten-year-old economy sedan with a low market value might get totaled over damage that would represent a routine, unremarkable repair on a newer vehicle of higher value, simply because the repair cost as a percentage of that lower ACV crosses the threshold much more easily.

This explains why some salvage listings show relatively light damage on older vehicles — the car didn't need to be badly wrecked to be declared a total loss, it just needed damage significant enough relative to its comparatively modest value. For buyers, this dynamic can represent real opportunity: an older vehicle totaled over what amounts to a fairly minor repair, priced accordingly at auction, can offer excellent value for a buyer willing and able to handle that specific repair themselves.

Insurers' Economic Incentives

It's worth understanding that insurers are making an economic decision, not a technical one, when they total a vehicle. The formula exists because it's generally cheaper for an insurer to pay the ACV and take possession of the salvage vehicle to sell at auction than to pay for a full repair once the repair cost crosses that threshold percentage — even in cases where the vehicle is technically very repairable by a competent shop. This is fundamentally different from a mechanic or engineer determining a vehicle is beyond repair; it's an accounting threshold, and it's exactly why so many salvage vehicles at auction are genuinely solid candidates for repair and return to service, not junk.

Using This Knowledge When Bidding

When you're comparing listings, it's worth developing a habit of glancing at the state of origin alongside the damage type and repair estimate, and factoring in your general sense of that state's approach when interpreting how significant the underlying damage likely is. Combined with photos and a careful read of the repair estimate versus ACV ratio, this context helps you build a more accurate mental model of what you're actually bidding on — separating vehicles that were totaled over genuinely significant damage from vehicles that were totaled largely due to formula mechanics on damage that, in absolute terms, isn't as severe as the "salvage" or "total loss" label might otherwise suggest to a buyer unfamiliar with how the system works.
